Diamond Manufacturers Biography
Diamond Brand was first established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1881 as a distributor of fur and feathers.  The business later moved to New York and the name was changed to the New York Drop Cloth Company.  The name "Diamond Brand" derived from the fact that canvas was graded and stamped with a brand according to quality and the "Diamond Brand" was an indication of first quality goods.  In both WW I and WW II, the company manufactured everything from tents to leggings to rucksacks.  In the 1930's, Diamond Brand began to manufacture tents and backpacks for the Boy Scouts of America.
Investment in North Carolina
In 1943, Dave Kemp, now President of the company succeeding his father, purchased a mill in Naples, North Carolina and focused the sewing operation on supporting the war effort.  He also bought a dairy farm between the present day sites of the Holmes State Forest and the Dupont State Forest.  After the war, Diamond Brand focused on making tents and backpacks for the Boy Scouts and other companies such as Morsans (now known as Campmor).  The corporate offices of Diamond Brand remained in New York until the death of Dave Kemp in 1966.
Arnold's Turn to Lead
Arnold Kemp, David's son, became President in 1966 and relocated the corporate offices to the site of the mill in Naples, North Carolina.  Just two years earlier in 1964, Diamond Brand opened a retail store after many requests from local outdoor enthusiasts as well as camp owners and Boy Scout leaders.  The retail store, first known as Diamond Brand Camping Center, started in a converted four car garage attached to the mill.  As the 1970's saw increased interest in backpacking, Arnold Kemp designed and produced a lightweight, durable backpacking tent known as the "Free Spirit."  The design, with its double A-frame and connecting ridge poles was extremely popular and spawned a series of Free Spirit models.  In the 1980's, Arnold started the development of a four man tent for the United States Army.  This tent, the "Soldier Crew Tent", went into production in 1989 and helped Diamond Brand become an important supplier of tents to the US Military.  During Arnold's tenure as President, Diamond Brand also manufactured backpacks, tents and soft luggage for many well-known outdoor companies including LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, REI and Eastern Mountain Sports.
Diamond Brand Today
In 2000, Will Gay purchased Diamond Brand from Arnold Kemp, and became the company’s CEO. In February 2004, Will saw an opportunity to modernize and expand the business and moved the manufacturing facility and corporate offices just up the road to Fletcher, NC. After almost doubling the size of the business by the end of 2004, Will decided he wanted a partner and in early 2005, John Delaloye came on board as co-owner and CFO of the business. In an effort to further add to Diamond Brand’s domestic manufacturing capabilities, Will and John purchased Stahlsac, a local manufacturing firm with expertise in Scuba luggage and international manufacturing. Today, Diamond Brand is primarily a contract manufacturer that specializes in outdoor gear for domestic and foreign militaries, nationally recognized outdoor programs, and leading watersports companies. The company also owns and manages Diamond Brand Outdoors, a specialty outdoor retailer, and Frugal Backpacker, an outdoor outlet shop. Both stores are located in Asheville, North Carolina.
